Payal Kapadia’s ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT wins Best International Feature at Gotham Awards

Filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s acclaimed drama All We Imagine As Light won big at the 2024 Gotham Awards, bagging the Best International Feature honour. Kapadia attended the ceremony held at Cipriani Wall Street, New York City on Monday night. The film also won the Best International Film at New York Film Critics Circle.

At the Gotham Awards, the Malayalam-Hindi film bagged the top honour in the category, which had other nominees like Green Border, Hard Truths, Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, and Vermiglio.

Kapadia had also secured a Best Director nomination at the awards — which honours independent films across the world — along with filmmakers like Sean Baker for Anora, Guan Hu for Black Dog, Jane Schoenbrun for I Saw the TV Glow, and RaMell Ross, who won the award for Nickel Boys.

Receiving the award, a thrilled Kapadia shared, “It’s our first fiction narrative feature film, so it is super nice to get this.” The film has been on a winning streak since May this year when Kapadia scripted history to become the first Indian filmmaker to win the prestigious Grand Prix at Cannes.

The Gotham Award win followed by the top honour at the New York Film Critics Circle comes just days after All We Imagine As Light bagged the Jury Grand Prize at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA). The film is garnering tremendous momentum in the award season with many hoping that the movie would also land an Oscar nomination.
